Pospolity w górach środkowej i południowej Europy oraz na Bliskim Wschodzie.
Gatunek holocykliczny i jednodomny. Żyje na młodych pędach, u nasady igieł jodły pospolitej — Abies alba Mill., zazwyczaj pojedynczo i nie jest odwiedzany przez mrówki. Należy do gospodarczo ważnych producentów spadzi.
