Gatunek palearktyczny, w Europie szeroko rozmieszczony, na północ sięgający do Grenlandii i Islandii, na wschód przez Syberię aż do Japonii. W Polsce występuje od Bałtyku aż po Tatry, ale niezbyt często notowany. Zasiedla głównie tereny nizinne i podgórza. Spotykany wśród mchów i gnijącej roślinności na wilgotnych łąkach, torfowiskach i wrzosowiskach, oraz w młodnikach sosnowych na suchych, piaszczystych glebach.
