Szeroko rozpowszechniony gatunek holarktyczny, w Europie występujący na całym obszarze aż do najdalszych krańców północnych. W Polsce znany z pojedynczych, rozproszonych stanowisk. Zasiedla przeważnie tereny nizinne i podgórskie. Wykazuje cechy synantropijne wkraczając do miast i osiedli wiejskich, gdzie spotykany w stajniach, oborach, kurnikach, gołębnikach i piwnicach. Znajdowany pod gnijącymi szczątkami roślinnymi, nawozem, ekskrementami i padliną, w gniazdach kretów i chomików oraz wśród odchodów nietoperzy w jaskiniach.
