Gatunek zamieszkujący całą północną i środkową Europę, na południe sięgający do Pirenejów, Włoch i Rumunii, wykazany ponadto z Kaukazu, Syberii i Ameryki Północnej. W Polsce występuje od Bałtyku po Tatry, nie notowany jednak jeszcze z wielu krain. Znajdowany na miejscach wilgotnych w lasach i torfowiskach wśród mchów i w murszejącym drewnie starych pni i pniaków.
