Gatunek obejmujący zwartym zasięgiem Karpaty i ich podgórze; poza tym notowany z licznych, oderwanych stanowisk w górach środkowej i południowo-wschodniej Europy oraz z pojedynczych stanowisk na Niżu Europejskim. W Polsce stosunkowo rzadko spotykany, tylko w Bieszczadach pospolity w niektórych latach. Żeruje na różnych gatunkach roślin z rodzaju chaber — Centaurea L., zwłaszcza na chabrze łąkowym — C. jacea L., w Bieszczadach głównie na chabrze austriackim — C. austriaca Willds. Poławiany od wiosny do jesieni.
