Taxon description
Gatunek rozpowszechniony w południowej i środkowej części Europy, docierający na północ do Wysp Brytyjskich, Danii i południowych prowincji Fennoskandii, a na wschód przez Syberię do Półwyspu Koreańskiego i północnych obszarów Mongolii i Chin. Zasiedla tereny nizinne i górzyste, gdzie jest częściej spotykany, sięga w Alpach do około 2000 m n.p.m. W Polsce jest chrząszczem pospolitym, występującym na całym obszarze prócz wyższych partii górskich. Zasiedla łąkowe i łąkowo-leśne środowiska, w których rosną byliny, należące głównie do baldaszkowatych (Umbelliferae) i złożonych (Compositae). Rójka rozpoczyna się około połowy maja i trwa do sierpnia, a optimum pojawu przypada na drugą połowę czerwca. Chrząszcze odżywiają się tkankami łodyg różnych roślin. Larwy żerują w wewnętrznych tkankach łodyg bylin gatunków należących do rodzajów: oset — Carduus L., ostrożeń — Cirsium Mill. i pokrzywa — Urtica L.; poza tym piśmiennictwo podaje jako rośliny żywicielskie dzięgiel — Angelica L., świerząbki — Chaerophyllum L., sadziec — Eupatorium L., barszcze — Heracleum L., starce — Senecio L., trędowniki — Scrophularia L. i trybule — Anthriscus Pers. Na jesieni larwa opuszcza się do części przykorzeniowej, gdzie zimuje. Cykl rozwojowy trwa przeważnie jeden rok, niekiedy tylko jest przedłużony do dwóch lat.
