Gatunek szeroko rozpowszechniony w Palearktyce od Portugalii przez całą Europę, Syberię aż do Amuru, poza tym notowany z Azji Mniejszej, Kaukazu i Japonii, w Fennoskandii dociera do koła podbiegunowego. Żyje na suchych glebach piaszczystych, niekiedy z domieszką gliny lub żwiru, zasiedla przeważnie otwarte miejsca, niezbyt zacienione, wykazuje cechy synantropijne — wkracza w obręb osiedli miejskich, spotykany często w dołach po wybranym żwirze, na nasypach kolejowych.
