Gatunek występujący w zachodniej, południowej i środkowej Europie oraz w południowej części Fennoskandii. W Polsce chrząszcz nadzwyczaj rzadko spotykany. Łowiony głównie na piaszczystych pobrzeżach rzek, przeważnie pod napływkami. Samce są na ogół rzadko spotykane na terenach nizinnych środkowej części Europy, częściej natomiast na obszarach górskich oraz w Skandynawii.
