Gatunek znany głównie z krajów basenu Morza Śródziemnego, docierający na północ do Alzacji, południowej części RFN (Witembergia, Bawaria, Frankonia) oraz Czechosłowacji; wykazywany również z Azji Mniejszej, Kaukazu, Zakaukazia i Syrii. Notowany wprawdzie z Polski, ale tylko ogólnikowo bez podania dat i miejscowości, więc wzmianki te mogły opierać się na danych odnoszących się do stanowisk leżących poza naszymi obecnymi granicami. Istnieje możliwość odkrycia go w południowej części kraju, gdyż jest notowany z kilku stanowisk na Słowacji. Zasiedla tereny nizinne i pagórkowate. Jako rośliny żywicielskie na terenach wilgotnych były wymieniane niektóre gatunki z rodziny turzycowatych (Cyperaceae), jak marzyca czarniawa — Schoenus nigricans L., turzyca ściśniona — Carex muricata L. i turzyca rozsunięta — C. divulsa Stokes. Występuje również na suchych skarpach i stokach, prawdopodobnie na gatunkach rodzaju kosmatka — Luzula Dc z rodziny sitowatych (Juncaceae). Na Słowacji był poławiany na ciepłych stanowiskach z roślinnością, której gatunkiem charakterystycznym był złocień baldachogronowy — Chrysanthemum corymbosum L.
