Gatunek zamieszkujący prawie całą Europę (nie znany z Półwyspu Iberyjskiego), w Fennoskandii sięgający daleko poza koło podbiegunowe; na wschód przez Syberię docierający do Władywostoku i Japonii. W Europie środkowej zasiedla głównie obszary górzyste, lokalnie występuje również na nizinach. W Polsce, choć nie znany z niektórych krain, występuje prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze prócz wyższych partii górskich. Postacie dojrzałe i larwy żyją w owocnikach hub rosnących na drzewach liściastych, rzadziej iglastych. W piśmiennictwie jako grzyby żywicielskie były podawane: hubiak pospolity — Fomes fomentarius (L. ex Fr.) Kickx i czyreń ogniowy — Phellinus igniarius (L. ex Fr.) Quél. Cykl rozwojowy dwuletni.
