Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony w Europie, zwłaszcza w jej części wschodniej (nie znany ze skrajnego obszaru nadatlantyckiego), sięgający na wschód do środkowej części Syberii; notowany także z Afryki Północnej, a także jako odrębny podgatunek z Kaukazu i Azji Mniejszej. W Polsce znany z nielicznych stanowisk położonych głównie w nizinnej, północnej części kraju. Materiałem lęgowym dla omawianego gatunku jest sosna, rzadziej świerk i modrzew. Larwy rozwijają się tylko w starym, ale nie spróchniałym, drewnie pni, pali, słupów, a zwłaszcza pieńków. Żerują w korze lub w pobliżu kory, ale przed przepoczwarczeniem wdrążają się płytko w drewno. Postacie dojrzałe wykluwają się w maju i są poławiane do początku września na pniach, pniakach i sągach oraz na gałęziach. W czasie upalnej, słonecznej pogody są bardzo lotne i trudne do schwytania.
