Szeroko rozmieszczony gatunek w prawie całej Europie, w Azji, Grenlandii i na Alasce. W Europie znany od Islandii, skrajnych prowincji północnej Fennoskandii i Półwyspu Kola aż do Hiszpanii północnej, Włoch, Bośni i Hercegowiny oraz Bułgarii. W Polsce dość pospolity od Bałtyku aż po Tatry, nie znany jeszcze tylko z kilku krain. Zasiedla zarówno tereny nizinne, jak i górzyste; w Alpach dociera do około 2600 m n.p.m. Poławiany wśród mchów na poboczach dróg, pobrzeżach lasu, rzadziej w głębi lasu, w górach pod płatami mchów, kamieniami i na murawach naskalnych.
