Taxon description
Gatunek kosmopolityczny, pochodzący z Australii i Nowej Zelandii, do Europy zawleczony w pierwszej połowie ubiegłego wieku — po raz pierwszy notowany w Anglii w 1839 roku, we Francji w 1857 oraz w Niemczech w 1870, obecnie znany z prawie całego kontynentu prócz skrajnych obszarów północnych. W Polsce znany z nielicznych stanowisk rozproszonych w różnych częściach kraju. Zasiedla tereny nizinne i górzyste do wysokości, na której znajdują się budynki mieszkalne. Najczęściej występuje jako synantrop w stodołach, szopach, pomieszczeniach dla zwierząt, piwnicach i wilgotnych mieszkaniach. Łowiono go wśród gnijących i zapleśniałych materiałów, jak słoma, siano, wypielone zielsko oraz inne odpadki i resztki pokarmowe, znacznie rzadziej w lasach na przegrzybionym drewnie i korze, na starych hubach i grzybach nadrzewnych i wśród opadłego listowia. Notowano go również ze starych gniazd ptaków oraz mrowisk. Larwy obserwowano na pleśni Trichothecium roseum Lk.
