Taxon description
Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony od Wysp Brytyjskich, południowych prowincji Fennoskandii oraz Karelii przez całą środkową część Europy aż do Pirenejów, północnych Włoch, Jugosławii i Rumunii. W Polsce znany z nielicznych stanowisk rozmieszczonych w ośmiu krainach. Zasiedla na terenach nizinnych głównie lasy o charakterze pierwotnym oraz rejony górzyste do strefy lasów liściastych. Znajdowany pod odstającą korą, w zmurszałym drewnie pni i pniaków, w opadłym listowiu zmieszanym z przegrzybiałymi gałązkami. Bionomia poznana niedostatecznie; według niektórych autorów jest chrząszczem grzybożernym, zaś według innych prowadzi drapieżny sposób życia, odżywiając się drobnymi bezkręgowcami.
