Taxon description
Gatunek palearktyczny znany z niemal całej Europy, Kaukazu, Zakaukazia, Iranu, Kazachstanu i Syberii. W Europie na północ dochodzi do południowych prowincji Fennoskandii, natomiast na zachód nie dociera do obszaru nadatlantyckiego. Występuje w dwu podgatunkach, notowanych również z Polski. Żeruje na trupach zwierząt kręgowych i bezkręgowych. Postać dojrzała zimuje w glebie lub ściółce leśnej, niekiedy jest spotykana również pod korą drzew. W polskich warunkach klimatycznych wywodzi się jedno pokolenie.
Podgatunek zasiedlający południowe wybrzeża Bałtyku od Danii aż do Mierzei Kurońskiej. W Polsce jest znany z Mierzei Wiślanej, znad Zalewu Wiślanego, z Gdyni i Koszalina; z uwagi na wymagania środowiskowe wzmianki o występowaniu w Poznaniu są niewiarygodne. Występuje na nadmorskich terenach piaszczystych, gdzie żeruje na trupach zwierząt morskich wyrzucanych na brzeg z morszczynami i glonami.
