Taxon description
Gatunek rozpowszechniony na całej kuli ziemskiej — w Europie towarzyszy człowiekowi aż do skrajnych obszarów północnych, wszędzie tam, gdzie znajdują się osiedla ludzkie. W Polsce pospolity, rozmieszczony od Bałtyku aż po Tatry. Występuje zarówno na swobodzie, jak i w domach, magazynach i składach produktów pochodzenia zwierzęcego; jest znajdowany również wśród suchych substancji roślinnych, lecz odżywia się tam wylinkami larw i martwymi owadami, na przykład mola Ephestia elutella (HüBn.). Jest notowany poza tym z gniazd wielu gatunków ptaków, z gołębników, starych uli i murszu starych drzew. Występuje tylko jedno pokolenie rocznie. Podobnie jak postacie dojrzałe, larwy żerują na suchej padlinie, surowych i wyprawionych skórach, suszonych rybach i mięsie, pierzu, wyrobach ze skóry i rogu; są notowane również jako szkodniki zbiorów entomologicznych oraz kokonów jedwabnika. Larwy przed przepoczwarczeniem rozpraszają się i wiercą chodniki oraz komory poczwarkowe w drewnianych częściach budynków, w korku, wyrobach tekstylnych i tytoniowych, książkach, zaprawie murarskiej, a nawet w ołowianych kablach. Występując niekiedy bardzo licznie, powodują poważne szkody ekonomiczne.
