Taxon description
Gatunek borealno-górski, rozmieszczony szerokim pasem w lesistej strefie północnej części Palearktyki; notowany ponadto z Ameryki Północnej. W Fennoskandii sięga do skrajnych prowincji północnych, gdzie jest częściej spotykany niż na południu. W górach wkracza do regla górnego. W Polsce jest wykazywany stosunkowo rzadko, głównie z południowej części kraju. Z obszarów niżowych jest znany z Pojezierza Mazurskiego i z Puszczy Białowieskiej, natomiast dawne dane sprzed przeszło stu lat o występowaniu w okolicach Gdańska są niepewne. Chrząszcz zasiedla drzewa liściaste i iglaste, zwłaszcza świerki. Larwy żerują przeważnie w korze i pod korą, rzadziej w miękkim, butwiejącym drewnie pni i kłód, niekiedy grubszych gałęzi oraz pniaków. Cykl rozwojowy co najmniej czteroletni. Larwy są bardzo drapieżne, napadają na inne larwy i poczwarki owadów drewno- i próchnożernych. Po przezimowaniu, wcześniej niż inne gatunki, przystępuje do żerowania — już pod koniec kwietnia lub na początku maja starsze larwy przepoczwarczają się, a młodsze larwy linieją. Larwa buduje komorę poczwarkową blisko powierzchni drewna, czasami w samej korze. Stadium poczwarki trwa od około 10 do 20 dni w zależności od warunków klimatycznych. Postać dojrzała po opuszczeniu komory poczwarkowej prowadzi skryty sposób życia — zwykle unika silnego oświetlenia, kryjąc się w szczelinach kory i drewna. Nie występuje na roślinach zielnych i kwiatach, stąd połowy metodą czerpakowania nie dają rezultatów. Występuje od maja do lipca.
