Taxon description
Gatunek znany z Ameryki Północnej, Meksyku i Algierii, notowany też z wielu krajów europejskich, do których został prawdopodobnie zawleczony i na niektórych obszarach zaaklimatyzował się na stałe. W Polsce znany z nielicznych rozproszonych stanowisk w różnych częściach kraju. Najczęściej spotykany jako synantrop w wilgotnych mieszkaniach, drogeriach, stodołach, pomieszczeniach dla zwierząt, spichrzach i magazynach. Odżywia się pleśniami rozwijającymi się na drewnianych ścianach, słomie, sianie, zbożu i jego przetworach, resztkach pokarmowych roślinnych i zwierzęcych, obiektach muzealnych, zwłaszcza zaniedbanych starych zielnikach i zbiorach zoologicznych. W środowiskach naturalnych występuje na zmurszałym przegrzybiałym drewnie i zapleśniałych hubach.
