Gatunek rozmieszczony w środkowej i północnej części Europy, na wschód przez Syberię docierający do Mongolii i Japonii. W Polsce rzadko spotykany i pojedynczo poławiany, nie jest jeszcze znany z wielu krain. W materiałach subfosylnych należy do najczęściej spotykanych gatunków omawianego rodzaju, obecne stanowiska na niżu środkowoeuropejskim należy więc traktować jako reliktowe. Występuje na pobrzeżach wód i na bagnach. Postacie dojrzałe ukazują się w maju i przeżywają do lipca; odżywiają się pyłkiem turzyc — Carex L., zwłaszcza turzycy dzióbkowatej — C. rostrata Stokes; piśmiennictwo ponadto podaje jako rośliny żywicielskie sitowie — Scirpus L. i oczerety — Schoenoplectus (Rchb.) Palla.
