Taxon description
Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony w niemal całej Europie, docierający na północy do 65° szerokości geograficznej; notowany nadto z Azji Mniejszej i Azji Środkowej. W Polsce występuje pospolicie prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze z wyjątkiem wyższych partii górskich. Żyje głównie na topoli osice — Populus tremula L. i topoli białej — P. alba L., rzadziej na topoli czarnej — P. nigra L. Imagines po opuszczeniu kryjówek zimowych w glebie, ukazują się wczesną wiosną na drzewach, gdzie w marcu samice składają jaja pod łuski męskich pączków kwiatowych, rzadziej żeńskich. Larwy żerują w pączkach, zwykle do momentu, gdy pączki uszkodzone żerem larw nie opadną na ziemię; larwy wdrażają się następnie w glebę, w której budują komorę poczwarkową. Młoda generacja ukazuje się w maju i wędruje na drzewa. Chrząszcze żerują na spodniej stronie liści. Od połowy czerwca przenoszą się do gleby na diapauzę letnią. W Anglii imagines są aktywne już w okresie jesieni i samice składają jaja.
