Pojedynczo lecz nierzadko spotykany motyl lata w IV i V w środowiskach lasów liściastych i mieszanych, parkach, zarośniętych krzewami łąkach i ogrodach. Gąsienice żerują od V do VII na drzewach liściastych jak lipy, klony, a także krzewach i roślinach zielnych jak żarnowiec, szczaw, bylica i inne. Kilka dni przed przepoczwarczeniem się na okres zimy barwa gąsienic staje się brudnoróżowa i następuje zanik delikatnego rysunku, jasnych plamek przy brodawkach i pasów bocznych. Zimę gatunek ten przebywa w ziemi w stadium poczwarki. W warunkach hodowlanych można otrzymać rzadko występujące drugie pokolenie motyli.
