Gatunek szeroko rozprzestrzeniony w Palearktyce, w Europie sięgający daleko poza koło podbiegunowe. W piśmiennictwie często notowany jako gatunek pospolity, w Polsce jednak stosunkowo rzadko wykazywany z rozproszonych stanowisk. Spotykany w bagienkach, rowach i jeziorach. Notowany przeważnie z wód kwaśnych, w Karkonoszach znajdowany na torfowiskach wysokich.
