Gatunek szeroko rozprzestrzeniony w Europie od koła podbiegunowego przez niemal cały kontynent do Pirenejów, środkowych. Włoch, północnych Bałkanów i Ukraińskiej SRR, notowany również z Syberii. W Polsce z wyjątkiem wysokich gór prawdopodobnie występuje w całym kraju, aczkolwiek brak jeszcze udokumentowanych danych z wielu krain. Znajdowany w murszejącym drewnie starych drzew, pod odstającą korą, w gniazdach mrówek Formica rufa L., Formica polyctena Foerster, Lasius niger L. i Lasius fuliginosus (Latr,).
