Taxon description
Jeden z najczęściej spotykanych przedstawicieli grotników lata w dwu pokoleniach: w IV i V oraz VIII. Gąsienice pierwszego pokolenia żywią się liśćmi tarniny, głogu, dzikiej róży i jesionu od połowy VI do połowy VII. Gąsienice drugiego pokolenia, łatwe do zaobserwowania i licznie występujące na bylicy pospolitej, polnej i niektórych innych roślinach zielnych, żerują w IX i X. Znane są różne odmiany barwne gąsienic: jasnozielone bez rysunku, brązowe, zielono uplamione i jasnozielone w czerwonobrązowe plamy. Dwie ostatnie odmiany do złudzenia przypominają rysunkiem i barwą torebki nasienne bylic. Gatunek zimuje w stadium poczwarki w oprzędzie w ziemi lub na jej powierzchni.
