Gatunek obejmujący zasięgiem prawie całą Europę (prócz jej krańców północnych), notowany poza tym z Algierii i Azji Środkowej. W Polsce pospolity na całym niżu i w niższych położeniach górskich. Występuje na polach, łąkach, przydrożach, w widnych lasach i zaroślach. Jako rośliny żywicielskie tego gatunku były podawane: groszek żółty — Lathyrus pratensis L., cieciorka pstra — Coronilla varia L., komonica zwyczajna — Lotus corniculatus L. oraz 9 gatunków z rodzaju wyka — Vicia L. Larwy żerują w pączkach kwiatowych.
