Taxon description
Gatunek kosmopolityczny, jego pierwotną ojczyzną jest prawdopodobnie Ameryka Środkowa; występuje jako synantrop w prawie całej Europie. W Polsce chrząszcz mało znany, podany tylko z pojedynczych miejscowości w sześciu krainach. Gatunek stale zawlekany do Europy z produktami żywnościowymi z obszarów o gorącym klimacie. Na nowych terenach może utrzymać się dłuższy czas tylko w ciepłych siedliskach, magazynach, młynach, piekarniach, sklepach i mieszkaniach. Żeruje na zbożu i jego przetworach. Cykl rozwojowy trwa około 7 miesięcy. Samica składa po 2-3 jaja dziennie w okresie około 8 miesięcy. Rozwój larwalny trwa 2-3 miesiące. Optymalne warunki rozwoju tego chrząszcza są przy temperaturze około +30°C.
