Gatunek palearktyczny, rozmieszczony w całej środkowej Europie i południowej części północnej Europy, na południe sięgający do Francji, północnych Włoch, Jugosławii i Siedmiogrodu. W Polsce znany z nielicznych stanowisk. Występuje prawdopodobnie w całym kraju na terenach nizinnych i w niższych partiach górskich, nie notowany jednak jeszcze z wielu krain. Żyje głównie w lasach liściastych, gdzie występuje licznie od maja do listopada w grzybach naziemnych oraz na drzewach w hubach, zwłaszcza z gatunków z rodzaju hubiak — Fomes Fr., wrośniak — Trametes (L.) Fr. i żagiew — Polyporus (Mich.) Fr.
