Taxon description
Gatunek zamieszkujący Afrykę Północną oraz zachodnią, środkową i południową część Europy, docierający na wschód do Kaukazu i niektórych krajów na Bliskim Wschodnie. W Polsce rzadko i sporadycznie spotykany, notowany z nielicznych stanowisk w jedenastu krainach, przy tym dane o jego występowaniu na Śląsku Górnym oraz w Sudetach Wschodnich opierają się na znaleziskach zeszłowiecznych, dlatego też wymagają potwierdzenia nowymi materiałami. Zasiedla głównie miejsca suche i nasłonecznione — na pastwiskach, miedzach, rumowiskach, przydrożach, pobrzeźach lasu i zarośli. Larwa żeruje w szyi korzeniowej wielu ostów, jak oset kędzierzawy — Carduus crispus L., oset nastroszony — C. acanthoides L., oset zwisły — C. nutans L. i ostrożeń lancetowaty — Cirsium lanceolatum (L.) Scop. Postacie dojrzałe łowiono na roślinach od maja do września.
