Gatunek rozmieszczony w środkowej i południowej Europie, zwłaszcza w ich częściach zachodnich. W Polsce występuje prawdopodobnie w całym kraju, nie jest jednak jeszcze znany z wielu krain. Cykl rozwojowy trwa przeciętnie dwa lata, może być jednak dłuższy. Zasiedla tereny nizinne i niższe położenia górskie. Rozwija się w konarach i uschniętych gałęziach w koronach drzew liściastych, zwłaszcza buka, niekiedy również w cienkich, suchych pniakach oraz gałęziach leżących na ziemi, jeszcze nie zawilgoconych i nie wykazujących przegrzybienia. W pierwszym roku rozwoju przezimowuje w stadium larwy, w drugim zaś roku jako postać imaginalna. Krótki okres pojawu chrząszczy na powierzchni przypada na maj i czerwiec.
