Taxon description
Pospolity, szeroko rozpowszechniony gatunek w prawie całej Europie (z wyjątkiem skrajnych prowincji północnych Fennoskandii), notowany także z Syberii. W Polsce występuje na całym obszarze prócz wyższych partii górskich. Bionomia tego gatunku jest dość dobrze poznana. Cykl rozwojowy trwa dwa lata. Larwy żerują na martwych, opadniętych na ziemię liściach drzew i krzewów; zimują dwukrotnie, przepoczwarczenie następuje wiosną. Postacie dojrzałe ukazują się w maju i są poławiane do lipca, pojedynczo, zwłaszcza samice jeszcze w sierpniu i wrześniu. Chrząszcze odżywiają się głównie żywą tkanką roślinną, liśćmi krzewów i drzew, cienką korą gałązek oraz suchymi liśćmi. Samice składają jaja w powierzchniową warstwę ziemi próchnicznej albo pod różne szczątki roślinne leżące na ziemi. W związku z pobieranym pokarmem, bogatym w substancje błonnikowe a ubogim w białko, występuje u tego gatunku, jak i u wielu innych z podrodziny Lagriinae, charakterystyczne zjawisko tzw. endosymbiozy z bakteriami.
