Taxon description
Gatunek kosmopolityczny, pierwotnie zasiedlający obszary tropikalne i subtropikalne globu ziemskiego, obecnie wraz z importowanymi towarami, zwłaszcza tytoniem, rozwleczony po całym świecie, także do krajów o umiarkowanym i zimnym klimacie. W Europie Środkowej na swobodzie nigdzie nie zaaklimatyzował się na trwałe, gdyż dla swego rozwoju potrzebuje przeciętnej temperatury 21°C. W Polsce znany tylko ze Śląska na podstawie znalezisk z ubiegłego stulecia oraz z dużych portów bałtyckich. W Europie znajdowany najczęściej w portach i dużych miastach w magazynach żywnościowych, sklepach, drogeriach i aptekach. Gatunek ten jest poważnym szkodnikiem w składnicach wysuszonych liści tytoniowych oraz wyrobów z tytoniu, w których rozwija się, żerując na suchych liściach. Może powodować także szkody w zaniedbanych zielnikach muzealnych.
