Gatunek europejski, rozmieszczony głównie w zachodniej części kontynentu; w miarę posuwania się na wschód coraz rzadziej spotykany. Występuje od Wysp Brytyjskich, Norwegii, środkowej Szwecji i południowej Finlandii przez środkową część Europy aż do Francji, Włoch, Bośni, Hercegowiny i Albanii, notowany nadto z Kaukazu. W Polsce występuje prawdopodobnie wszędzie prócz wyższych partii górskich, nie znany jednak jeszcze z wielu krain. Zasiedla zarówno tereny nizinne, jak i górskie, docierając do górnej granicy lasu. Występuje głównie na jesieni i wiosną, pod odstającą, pleśniejącą korą, wśród mchów i porostów na starych drzewach (zwłaszcza liściastych), pod opadłymi liśćmi i wiązkami chrustu, w marszu starych pniaków, w hubach i w mrowiskach.
