Taxon description
Gatunek występujący głównie w południowej i środkowej części Europy, notowany ponadto z Wysp Brytyjskich, Danii i nielicznych stanowisk południowych w krajach Fennoskandii. W Polsce, chociaż nie jest znany jeszcze z niektórych krain, występuje prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze prócz wyższych partii górskich. Zasiedla zarówno zimne i wilgotne środowiska, jak również stanowiska kserotermiczne. Imagines bywają poławiane od kwietnia do jesieni w dolinach rzek i potoków, na pobrzeżach lasu i cieków wodnych, mokrych łąkach, polach, w parkach i ogrodach. Chrząszcze żerują na liściach roślin zielnych. Jako rośliny pokarmowe wymieniano w piśmiennictwie: podagrycznik pospolity — Aegopodium podagraria L., mikołajek polny — Eryngium campestre L., świerząbek orzęsiony — Chaerophyllum hirsutum L., arcydzięgiel litwor — Archangelica officinalis Hoffm., lubczyk ogrodowy — Levisticum officinale Koch, oset nastroszony — Carduus acanthoides L. i oset zwisły — C. nutans L. Generacja dwuletnia. Samica od połowy maja do połowy czerwca składa ogółem 350-750 jaj w złożach, każde po 10-100 jaj, które są przyklejane na stronę dolną liści i przykrywane innymi liśćmi. Rozwój embrionalny trwa około dwu tygodni. Wylęgnięte larwy spadają na glebę, w którą wdrażają się i żerują na szyi korzeniowej i korzeniu. Na jesieni larwy przewędrowują na głębokość 30-40 cm, gdzie zimują, a na wiosnę wznawiają żerowanie, które trwa do lipca-września, kiedy to następuje przepoczwarzenie. Stadium poczwarki trwa około 3 tygodni. Młode imagines zimują w komorze poczwarkowej, w której pozostają około 8 miesięcy aż do wiosny roku następnego.
