Taxon description
Rozmieszczenie ogólne tego gatunku nie jest dobrze poznane z uwagi na istniejące przez długi czas niejasności taksonomiczne. Wykazywany z krajów Europy środkowej i północnej, Belgii, górzystych obszarów Francji i Włoch; notowany również z zachodniej części Ameryki Północnej. W Polsce rzadko notowany; rozsiedlenie na naszych terenach jest słabo poznane, gdyż mylono go z pospolitym gatunkiem M. erythropus (Gmelin), do którego jest bardzo podobny i przez wielu badaczy uważany za jego odmianę. Zamieszkuje tereny lesiste głównie na podgórzach i w górach, gdzie dociera do wysokości około 2000 m n.p.m., zasiedlając martwe lub obumierające drzewa iglaste, głównie świerki i jodły. Cykl rozwojowy trwa co najmniej cztery lata. Larwy żerują pod korą lub w butwiejącym, miękkim i wilgotnym drewnie powalonych pni, pniaków, wykrotów, kłód. Przepoczwarczenie następuje w sierpniu-wrześniu w komorze zbudowanej przez larwę w miękkim drewnie pod korą lub głębiej w czerwonobrunatnym próchnie. Postacie dojrzałe po przezimowaniu w komorze poczwarkowej ukazują się w maju i przeżywają do lipca; prowadzą skryty sposób życia w ciągu dnia, wychodzą z kryjówek wieczorem i na początku nocy— przylatują wtedy niekiedy do źródeł sztucznego światła.
