Taxon description
Gatunek rozmieszczony w środkowej i południowej części Europy oraz w Afryce Północnej, notowany również z Syrii i Azji Mniejszej. W Polsce należy do wielkich rzadkości i jest znany z nielicznych stanowisk tylko w trzech krainach. Chrząszcz ten jest związany biologicznie ze starymi sosnami. W okresie wegetacyjnym występuje głównie w koronach drzew, dlatego bywa spotykany nadzwyczaj rzadko, niekiedy tylko poławiano go na runie pod sosnami. Zimuje pod korą grubych sosen blisko ich podstawy; w czasie dni słonecznych opuszcza zimowiska niekiedy już w lutym i przelatuje na gałęzie, gdzie na wiosnę odbywa się kopulacja i składanie jaj. Larwy odżywiają się mszycami i czerwcami, przepoczwarczają się na korze pni w drugiej połowie lipca. Stadium poczwarki trwa 10-25 dni. Po wylęgnięciu młode imagines pozostają jeszcze kilka dni w osłonie larwalnej i poczwarkowej aż do całkowitego wybarwienia. Chrząszcz niszczy na sosnach szkodliwego czerwca Palaeococcus fuscipennis Burm.
