Taxon description
Gatunek zamieszkujący południową i środkową część Europy, docierający na północ do Danii, Litwy i Estonii. W Polsce znany z nielicznych rozproszonych stanowisk w tylko siedmiu krainach, przy czym większość danych o jego rozmieszczeniu opiera się na znaleziskach sprzed przeszło stu lat; ostatnia wzmianka o znalezieniu tego ryjkowca w Głogówku na Śląsku Dolnym opublikowana była przez J. Seidla w 1931 r., dopiero po upływie 60 lat złowiono kilka okazów w okolicy Wrocławia. Występuje w lasach liściastych, parkach, wzdłuż dróg i na zboczach. Żyje na wiązie pospolitym — Ulmus campestris L. em. Huds. (U. foliacea Gilib.) i wiązie górskim (brzoście) — U. scabra Mill. (U. montana With.). W maju samica składa jaja na liściu w nerw środkowy, rzadziej w boczny. Larwa w maju-czerwcu najczęściej minuje liść na wierzchołku — początkowo drąży chodnik po obu stronach nerwu, a następnie wygryza minę w postaci płytki; w czerwcu przepoczwarcza się w kulistym kokonie w miejscu ostatniego żerowania.
