Gatunek rozmieszczony w niemal całej Europie, na północ docierający do koła podbiegunowego. Pospolity w całym kraju, nie jest jednak jeszcze notowany z niektórych krain. Występuje na stanowiskach roślinności trawiastej oraz uprawach zbóż, zwłaszcza owsa i jęczmienia. Regularnie spotykany na trawnikach śródmiejskich. Roślinami żywicielskimi są różne gatunki traw oraz zboża: perz właściwy — Agropyron repens L., kupkówka pospolita — Dactylis glomerata L., stokłosa prosta — Bromus erectus Huds. i jęczmień zwyczajny — Hordeum vulgare L. Chrząszcze po przezimowaniu ukazują się na roślinach w kwietniu. Samica składa jaja w maju i czerwcu. Larwa po kilkutygodniowym żerowaniu sporządza na roślinie siateczkowaty oprzęd, w którym przebywa około 8 dni i następnie przepoczwarcza się; po około dwu tygodniach ukazuje się postać dorosła.
