Gatunek rozpowszechniony na obszarze zachodniej i środkowej części Europy oprócz wyższych partii górskich. W Polsce notowany z kilku zaledwie stanowisk w południowej części kraju, a ostatnio znaleziony na Pomorzu. Występuje na suchszych glebach pól uprawnych, łąk i ogrodów, najczęściej w pobliżu zabudowań gospodarskich — w pryzmach kompostowych, pod rozkładającymi się materiałami organicznymi: słomą, sianem, plewami, zielskiem, suchym krowieńcem; niekiedy znajdowany w gniazdach myszy.
