Gatunek słonolubny, zasiedlający wybrzeża morskie w zachodniej części Europy, Skandynawii południowej oraz wybrzeża południowe Morza Północnego i Bałtyku. W Polsce pewne stanowiska tego gatunku znajdują się tylko na obszarach nadmorskich; z uwagi na wymagania ekologiczne dane o występowaniu na stanowiskach śródlądowych są niewiarygodne. Zasiedla suche gleby piaszczyste, głównie na wydmach nadmorskich. Prowadzi skryty sposób życia w powierzchniowej warstwie gleby, najczęściej wśród korzeni traw i bylin, zwłaszcza bylicy — Artemisia L. Chrząszcze spotyka się w ciągu całego roku; w ciągu dnia są ukryte w piasku, na powierzchni ukazują się o zmroku i nocą. Larwy żerują wśród szczątków roślinnych pokrytych piaskiem. Przepoczwarczenie w lipcu lub sierpniu (B. Burakowski*).
