Gatunek zamieszkujący głównie środkową i północną część Europy (w Fennoskandii docierający do koła podbiegunowego), na południe sięgający po północne i środkowe Włochy oraz północne obszary Półwyspu Bałkańskiego. W Polsce zasiedla zarówno tereny nizinne, jak i górzyste; aczkolwiek nie jest jeszcze znany z niektórych krain, występuje prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze. Spotykano go zarówno w suchych, jak i w wilgotnych środowiskach: w dolinach rzecznych, na pobrzeżach lasów, wilgotnych łąkach, młakach, torfowiskach, suchych i naskalnych murawach i nasłonecznionych zboczach. Gatunek polifagiczny, notowany niekiedy jako szkodnik poziomek, malin, jabłoni, wierzby koszykarskiej oraz młodych drzew. Postacie dojrzałe żerują na różnych roślinach zielnych, krzewach i drzewach liściastych, larwy odżywiają się korzeniami; przepoczwarczenie odbywa się w glebie. Generacja jednoroczna.
