Taxon description
Gatunek rozsiedlony w środkowej i północnej części Europy (nie znany jeszcze z Anglii i Danii), docierający w Skandynawii do skrajnych obszarów północnych, sięgający na wschód po Syberię. W Polsce smolik drągowinowiec występuje prawdopodobnie w całym kraju, ale z dotychczasowych danych o jego rozmieszczeniu wynika, że w północnej i zachodniej części jest częściej spotykany niż w południowej i wschodniej. Nie jest jeszcze znany z Gór Świętokrzyskich, Kotliny Nowotarskiej, Pienin, Bieszczadów i Tatr. W ciągu roku występuje jedna generacja. Rośliną żywicielską jest głównie sosna zwyczajna — Pinus silvestris L., rzadziej sosna wejmutka — P. strobus L. Samice składają jaja w porcjach po kilka sztuk, w korę gałęzi i w górnej części pnia. Larwy drążą kręte chodniki i żerują w miazdze. Komorę poczwarkową budują w bielu, wyścielając ją drobnymi wiórkami i trocinkami.
