Gatunek europejski, notowany głównie ze środkowej części kontynentu od Francji do Uralu, docierający na północ do Danii i południowych prowincji Fennoskandii, a na południe do północnych Włoch. W Polsce występuje prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze prócz wyższych partii górskich, ale z niektórych krain brak wiadomości o jego zasiedleniu. Jest ekologicznie związany z drzewami iglastymi, głównie sosnami — Pinus L., rzadziej świerkami — Picea Dietr. Materiałem lęgowym tego chrząszcza są usychające cienkie gałęzie, zarówno na drzewach żywych, jak i powalonych, również niedawno obłamane lub ścięte gałęzie leżące na ziemi. Larwy żerują pod korą, a po przezimowaniu wdrążają się w drewno, gdzie przy końcu chodnika sporządzają w końcu lata komorę poczwarkową. Wylęgnięte imago pozostaje na zimę w komorze.
