Taxon description
Gatunek południowopalearktyczny, rozsiedlony we wszystkich krajach południowej i środkowej Europy, docierający na północ do Anglii, Danii i południowych prowincji Fennoskandii, a na wschód sięgający po Tomsk na Syberii; notowany poza tym z Afryki Północnej, Azji Mniejszej i Kaukazu. W Polsce rozprzestrzeniony od Bałtyku aż po Tatry prócz wyższych partii górskich. Cykl rozwojowy w sprzyjających warunkach trwa trzy lata, ale może być przedłużony do czterech-pięciu lat. Larwy żerują w martwym, zmurszałym i przegrzybiałym drewnie licznych gatunków drzew liściastych, rzadziej iglastych; drążą one podłużne chodniki głównie w przyziemnej części pni, pniaków i różnego rodzaju słupów stykających się z ziemią. Przepoczwarczenie następuje pod koniec czerwca i w lipcu w kokonie sporządzonym z wiórków, trocin i cząstek otaczającej gleby. Postacie dojrzałe pojawiają się późnym latem i jesienią. Rójka odbywa się o zmroku.
