Gatunek występujący w południowej i środkowej części Europy oraz na Kaukazie. W Polsce znany z nielicznych stanowisk rozproszonych w zachodniej i południowej części kraju. Zasiedla tereny nizinne i podgórza; występuje głównie na pobrzeżach rzek i lasów łęgowych. Żeruje na roślinach zielnych, krzewach i drzewach, głównie z rodziny różowatych — Rosaceae, jak na przykład śliwa tarnina — Prunus spinosa L., głóg — Crataegus sp., malina właściwa — Rubus idaeus L., pięciornik rozłogowy — Potentilla reptans L.; poławiano go poza tym na liściach brzozy, olszy i wierzby.
