Taxon description
Choć szeroko rozpowszechniony gatunek na obszarach półkuli północnej, spotykany na ogół bardzo rzadko, przeważnie pojedynczo, niekiedy tylko lokalnie liczniej. W Ameryce Północnej rozmieszczony od około 40° szer. geogr. do Alaski i Nowej Fundlandii, w Europie od koła podbiegunowego do Pirenejów, północnej części Włoch i Serbii, na wschód przez Syberię sięga do Kamczatki, poza tym notowany z Tybetu. Gatunek leśny, występujący przeważnie na pogorzeliskach lasów, spotykany czasami masowo pod zwęgloną korą przy podstawie pni, zwłaszcza sosen. Ma dobrze wykształcone skrzydła, przylatuje niekiedy do światła, znajdowany również w obrębie miast, prawdopodobnie znęcony zapachem dymów.
