Taxon description
Gatunek zamieszkujący prawie w całej Europie z wyjątkiem skrajnych prowincji północnych Fennoskandii i południowej części Półwyspu Iberyjskiego, podawany także z Kaukazu i Syberii Zachodniej. W Polsce występuje od północnej części kraju aż do Tatr, jednak dotychczas nie znany z Podlasia, Wyżyny Małopolskiej i Kotliny Nowotarskiej. Żyje na terenach nizinnych i górzystych aż do strefy subalpejskiej. Cykl rozwojowy trwa dwa lata i może się przedłużyć o jeden rok. Larwy żerują głównie w biało, rzadziej żółto lub czerwono butwiejącym drewnie wskutek destrukcyjnej działalności określonych grzybów. Zasiedlają martwe lub obumierające pnie wszystkich gatunków drzew liściastych, nie omijają również drzew owocowych. Drążą dość głębokie chodniki w twardym, niezbyt wilgotnym drewnie. Przepoczwarczenie następuje pod koniec lata i wczesną jesienią. Postacie dorosłe prowadzą skryty sposób życia, znajdowane są w ciągu całego roku, przeważnie w niewielkiej liczbie osobników.
