Taxon description
Burakowski et al. 1986c:
Gatunek kosmopolityczny, rozprzestrzeniony niemal na całej kuli ziemskiej, zamieszkujący całą Europę z wyjątkiem północnej części Fennoskandii. W północnej i środkowej części kontynentu europejskiego występuje tylko synantropijnie. W Polsce chrząszcz bardzo pospolity, spotykany na całym obszarze w pomieszczeniach użytkowanych przez człowieka. Generacja jednoroczna w strefie umiarkowanej (przy przeciętnej temperaturze +17° rozwój trwa koło 200 dni), w strefie subtropikalnej i tropikalnej mogą występować dwa-trzy pokolenia w roku. Samica składa około 100 jaj w ciągu trzech tygodni. Jest szkodnikiem zapasów magazynowych. Larwy żerują w suchym pieczywie, przetworach zbożowych, przyprawach korzennych i materiałach aptecznych. Wyrządza niekiedy poważne szkody w zaniedbanych zbiorach entomologicznych oraz w zielnikach.
