Szeroko rozprzestrzeniony, choć rzadko i sporadycznie spotykany gatunek północnoholarktyczny, notowany z północno-wschodniej Europy, Syberii, północnej Mongolii, północno-wschodnich Chin, Korei, Japonii, Ameryki Północnej i Kanady. W Polsce znany z nielicznych stanowisk leżących w północno-wschodniej części kraju. Zamieszkuje drzewostany iglaste i mieszane. Postacie dojrzałe ukazują się w drugiej połowie czerwca i występują do sierpnia. Samice składają jaja w szczeliny i stare chodniki wyjściowe na martwych drzewach liściastych i iglastych — na stojących i powalonych pniach, wiatrołomach i grubych gałęziach leżących na ziemi. Larwy żerują początkowo w bielu, następnie wdrążają się w twardziel, wygryzając podłużne chodniki. Po drugim lub trzecim przezimowaniu larwy sporządzają komorę poczwarkową, a przepoczwarczenie następuje w czerwcu lub lipcu. Według badań własnych w Puszczy Białowieskiej gatunek odbywa rozwój w martwym, suchym drewnie świerka pospolitego — Picea excelsa (Lam.) Lk. (B. Burakowski*).
