Gatunek obejmujący zasięgiem niemal całą Europę, kraje Maghrebu, Kaukaz, Azję Mniejszą i Turkmenię. W Polsce rozmieszczony prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze, nie jest jednak notowany jeszcze z niektórych krain. Chrząszcz związany ekologicznie z poziomo budowanymi sieciami pająków. Występuje w suchych dziuplach starych drzew, pod ich odstającą korą, na strychach domów, w budynkach gospodarczych, wiatrakach i młynach. Zarówno larwy, jak i postacie dojrzałe, ściśle współżyją z pająkami, na przykład z synantropijnym Tegenaria domestica (Clerck). Postacie dojrzałe, jak i larwy, poruszają się swobodnie po czynnych pajęczynach lub w ich sąsiedztwie, a ich silnie i odstające oszczecone ciało chroni je przed atakami pająków. Larwy żywią się resztkami wyssanych przez pająki owadów. Po przezimowaniu larwy przepoczwarczają się zwykle w maju; stadium poczwarkowe trwa około dwa tygodnie. Postacie dojrzałe pojawiają się w maju i mogą przeżyć do sierpnia.
