Taxon description
Gatunek palearktyczny, w Europie występujący od krajów śródziemnomorskich aż po Wyspy Brytyjskie, Danię i południową Szwecję. W Polsce drwalniczek Saxesena jest rozpowszechniony na całym obszarze kraju prócz wyższych położeń górskich, nie jest jeszcze notowany z Podlasia, Sudetów Wschodnich, Kotliny Nowotarskiej i Pienin. Gatunek polifagiczny, żerujący w drewnie drzew liściastych i iglastych, ale najczęściej spotykany na dębach. Opada strzały, gałęzie i pniaki. Postacie dojrzałe po przezimowaniu w żerowiskach, roją się w kwietniu. Na 50-100 samic spotyka się jednego samca. Samica wydrąża rozwidlony chodnik macierzysty, w którym składa jaja grupkami, a młode larwy wygryzają wspólną płaską, nieregularną komorę w drewnie, odżywiając się przy tym częściowo drewnem i częściowo grzybnią.
